FERIA DE CABALLO – HORSE FAIR IN JEREZ

The World- renowned horse fair (Feria de Caballo) in Jerez has been a fixture in the city for more than 500 years. Jerez, which is on the Costa de la Luz is well known for its sherry, but it is also widely regarded in equestrian circles for the annual fair that takes place here every year.

This year, this seven day spectacular will be held from 10th – 17th May and will be located at the González Hontoria Park, where displays, shows and of course the obligatory eating, drinking and dancing that comes with any Spanish feria. This horse fair is considered one of the most important festivals held in Jerez de la Frontera, and there are a lot to choose from.

Jerez is equally noted for its sherry, and there is no shortage of the stuff during the festival. Look out for the pale, dry Manzanilla which is perfect to accompany seafood and cured meats. The sweet sherry from Pedro Ximenez makes a perfect dessert wine.

Another cultural event is flamenco, which is said to have originated in Jerez and Seville, and it is a way of life for young and old, from eight to eighty!

If you do get a chance to go to the horse fair, it is one of those typically Spanish experiences you won’t forget – and it will bring you back year after year.Some of the events not to be missed are as follow:-

• The Dancing Andalucian horses at the Royal Riding School – you have to see it to believe it!

• Polo Matches where the best dressed mingle.

• Parades every day, done as only the Spanish can, with ornate costumes, riding on horseback through the streets.

• Lots of Flamenco dancing, along with music featuring throughout the week at different venues throughout the town.
