The Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey (Path of the King) is attached to the cliff side of a gorge at El Chorro in the province of Malaga. A narrow walking platform 100 metre high is not for the feint hearted, especially when it was in disrepair for many years yet people still dared to walk the walk!

Coming in at no.5 on a list of 26 things to this year, Lonely Planet has included this daring walk in their list of ‘The World’s hottest new experiences for 2015’and it offers visitors stunning views down to the blue waters below and has drawn much media attention since the renovations began to make the feature usable again.

The walking route was originally constructed in 1905 and was named for King Alfonso XIII who walked it in 1921. It was then officially closed during the 1990’s when five people tragically lost their lives. The then dangerous pathway, whose complete reconstruction was finished this year, now is not only a safe, but an exhilarating walk through the gorge.

This could be a busy year for resident and business owners in the El Chorro area, as an influx of visitors to the Caminito are expected, but also the second stage of the Vuelta de España cycling race will end there, so a busy time is expected for all concerned. It will be a huge boost for the locally economy with visitors not just from all over Spain, but the world, coming not only to view the walkway, but now to walk it and cross it off their 26 of Hottest new experiences of 2015.
